Inter-basin transfer

Inter-basin water transfer involves taking water from areas of surplus to areas where it is in critically short supply and negatively impacting industrial and other developments. The energy requirements of pumping water for inter-basin transfer are very high and the research reports emphasize that transfers are used when water in one area is in critically short supply. Transfers require a high level of investment and technical cooperation between surplus area and the recipient area.
